CRAZZ......

                                    TXT

                                  {TOMMOROW X TOGETHER}

Craze is the best word to sum it all up.

While big names such as Exo and Big Bang were some of the driving forces of the Korean Wave, currently it's at such an advanced level of mania that it seems quite ridiculous.

Every new friend I make always ends up asking me if I like K-pop; it has gotten to the point that people not only base their friendships on a particular idol group but also on what their friend thinks of that idol group. If I have a negative impression of a group, chances are someone will take offense. I have to tread on eggshells around the people who literally love their bias and bias groups.

While I have nothing against the spread of K-pop, since I myself like it and enjoy the unique videos for the songs, when I see people appropriate the Korean culture, it is disheartening to know that instead of respecting the culture that they originate from, they choose to idolize a culture that is foreign to them. This way, many Korea boos lose their own cultural heritage while trying to be like their Oppas and Unnis.

K-pop is fine as a genre of music but when people get obsessive and possessive over their idols, it can get quite scary. People should realize that your Oppas and Unnis don't belong to you ; they have their own lives and decisions. Neither you not I can change what an idol does, so thinking that so-and-so would marry you is out of the question. (I have an actual friend who said she wanted to marry Minho. Needless to say, I was repulsed.)

While the spreading of a culture should be something that is celebrated, we should not just narrow our vision to just liking K-pop. You should look beyond that and see what the rest of the culture has to offer, without losing sight of your own culture. You may find that you like a particular Korean dish and can replicate it at home to a good extent or that you have a natural flair for the language and could learn it easily.

The only thing to keep in mind is cultural appropriation and racism should not be something to picked up from any culture. Adapting from a culture should be fine as long as you don't make fun of it or degrade others who follow that practice.

KPOP
FANS IN INDIA
K-pop found its first fans in India in the north-eastern state of Manipur - a ban on Bollywood films by separatist rebels in the region sparked a following for Korean dramas and eventually K-pop. The genre has since exploded across India.
